What is the NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a vital program designed to provide essential care and support for individuals under the age of 65 living with permanent and significant disabilities. This initiative aims to empower participants by granting them access to necessary resources that can enhance their quality of life and facilitate their active participation in daily activities. Eligible individuals have the opportunity to identify reasonable and essential supports tailored to their specific needs and goals. Through the NDIS, participants receive funding to cover the costs associated with these vital supports, ensuring they can lead fulfilling lives despite their disabilities.
Find more information on the NDIS website.
Who is eligible for the NDIS?
Eligibility for the NDIS depends on a few different things such as:
1. Age: You need to be under 65 years at the time of your application
2. Residency: You need to be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or a New Zealand citizen who holds a Protected Special Category Visa
3. Disability: You must have a permanent disability that significantly affects how you can communicate, move, care for yourself, or manage your life.
4. Early Intervention: You might be eligible if early intervention would substantially improve your functioning, or delay or decrease a decline in functioning, for you or your child.

You can make a Verbal Access Request (VAR) or fill out an Access Request Form (ARF). You can do this by phone, email, or at an NDIS or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) office.

What does the NDIS fund?
With the NDIS, you will work out what reasonable and necessary supports you need to live your life and achieve your goals. You’ll then receive funding to pay for these supports.
Reasonable and necessary supports help someone with a disability to:
1. pursue their goals, objectives and aspirations.
2. increase their independence.
3. increase social and economic participation, and.
4. develop their capacity to actively take part in the community.
This support may include education, employment, community and social participation, independence, living arrangements, and health and well-being.
How will my funding be managed?
When it comes to managing your NDIS plan, participants have the flexibility to choose from three distinct options or even combine them based on their preferences and needs. These options provide individuals with varying levels of control and support in overseeing their plans effectively:
1. Managed by the NDIA: In this arrangement, a dedicated representative from the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) takes charge of managing your plan. They handle budgeting, payments, and coordination of supports on your behalf.
2. Managed by a Plan Manager: Opting for a Plan Manager involves entrusting an external professional or organization to oversee the financial aspects of your NDIS plan. This includes processing payments to service providers and ensuring compliance with funding guidelines.
3. Self-Management: Choosing to self-manage your NDIS plan grants you maximum autonomy and responsibility in administering all elements of your support package. This approach empowers you to make decisions about how funds are allocated, which services are utilized, and how goals are pursued. By offering these diverse management options, the NDIS aims to cater to individual preferences while promoting greater independence and choice for participants in navigating their disability support arrangements effectively.
How much does each service cost?
