What is Supported Independent Living?
Supported Independent Living is the NDIS funding that pays for support workers in the home, not for the housing. It is a “Core” support.
Your plan sets the amount, based on a roster of care that shows when support is needed, how many people share it, and what happens overnight.
What does SIL cover, and what doesn’t it?

How SIL with Janan Care works
- First conversation. Call or send a message. We reply within 24 hours and ask about your area, the plan and the hours needed.
- Home visit. We meet the person and family, go through the NDIS plan and the roster of care, and learn routines, preferences and goals.
- Reports and therapists. If there are therapist reports or assessments, we read them and work with the team already involved.
- Service agreement. Plain-English terms setting out the supports, hours and how we work together.
- Care plan and home risk assessment. Written for the person, before any shift starts.
- Worker matching. We match support workers on location, skills, gender, language and culture, and introduce them before the first shift.
- First shifts and settling in. We check in after each new worker’s first shift, and again about two weeks in, to make sure the roster is right.
SIL vs SDA vs ILO
| Option | What it is | Who provides it | Janan Care |
|---|---|---|---|
| SIL (Supported Independent Living) | The daily support at home | A registered SIL provider | Provides it |
| SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation) | The housing itself, built for people with very high support needs | An SDA provider (the landlord) | Works alongside SDA providers |
| ILO (Individualised Living Options) | A flexible home-and-living arrangement designed around one person, such as living with a host | An ILO provider | Doesn’t provide it |
Shared home or your own home?
-
Shared home Two to five people live together and share some support hours, with one-to-one time where each person needs it.
Housemates are matched on routines, personalities, interests and support needs.
-
Your own home SIL can also be delivered where you already live: a home you own or rent, or your own SDA home.
We bring the support to you.
Either way, the support follows you. If you move, you can keep the same provider.
How much support? Ratios and overnight
A roster can include:
- Shared support (for example 1:2 or 1:3): one worker supports two or three housemates at quieter times of the day.
- One-to-one (1:1): a worker with one person, for personal care, outings or times when someone needs full attention.
- Two-to-one (2:1): two workers with one person, for example for some transfers.
- Active overnight: a worker is awake all night.
- Sleepover (passive) night: a worker sleeps at the home and gets up when needed.
Who are our support workers?
Every Janan Care support worker has NDIS Worker Screening clearance, a Working With Children Check and our training before their first shift.
If your regular worker can’t come, we send someone else from your team.

SIL and the 2026–27 NDIS changes
- The 2026 budget reset doesn’t cut SIL support In force The reset lets the NDIA cut two kinds of funding in new and reassessed plans from 1 October 2026; SIL rostered support isn’t one of them.
- If your plan funds 24‑hour care, there’s a safeguard In force You can ask for the plan to be varied within 90 days if a reduction leaves too little funding to keep the 24‑hour care going (two conditions, below).
The rules in detail
SIL registration. NDIS rules F2026L00802, made 23 June 2026 (in force). Providers who weren’t registered had to apply by 30 September 2026; from 1 October 2026, plan managers are told not to pay SIL invoices from providers who didn’t apply.
The budget reset. The two kinds of funding are social and community participation, and improved daily living skills. The Act names “assistance with daily living” and “home and living” as outside those cuts (NDIS Act s34A and s47B(9), and the Support Determination 2026; in force).
The 24‑hour care safeguard. Both must apply: the plan funds continuous 24‑hour care, and it has at least $215,030 across daily living, home and living and community participation supports. NDIS Act s47B and the High Support Needs Participants Determination 2026 (in force).
Plans renew automatically from 1 February 2027. Old-framework plans will roll over for 12 months with the same amounts, minus one-off funding and the two cuts above (NDIS Act s50A, inserted by the Securing the NDIS for Future Generations Act 2026; legislated, not yet commenced).
